Shelves will be continuously replenished and high-touch areas of stores deep-cleaned daily
In this time of uncertainty – not to mention people “panic buying” and clearing the shelves of items like toilet paper – it’s reassuring to know how hard the employees all along the grocery supply chain are working to keep the shelves re-stocked. Fred Meyer, one of Oregon’s most beloved superstore chains, is taking numerous steps to protect its customers and associates in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, while also keeping up the availability of goods at store locations. “We’ll be there for our communities when they need us most,” says Rodney McMullen, Fred Meyer Chairman and CEO.
All Fred Meyer and QFC stores will reserve the hours of 7–8am every Monday–Thursday for seniors and other vulnerable shoppers. Fred Meyer also conducts a daily deep clean at all of its locations. “All of our associates are focused making sure we have a safe and clean environment for our customers. Frequently touched areas are wiped down and sanitized, restrooms are cleaned, and a rotating deep clean process occurs at every one of our stores,” says Jeffery Temple, Fred Meyer’s Director of Corporate Affairs.
Kroger, Fred Meyer’s parent company, is also making efforts to eliminate food insecurity and protect the vulnerable in our communities. The Kroger “Zero Waste Zero Hunger Foundation” has already raised $3 million dollars to rapidly deploy hunger relief resources. They plan to help food banks, while also helping schools who are providing food to children in communities across America. Individuals can take part in this effort as well. Customers can donate to the foundation at store checkouts or online. This initiative is especially crucial during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Stores are receiving deliveries daily; however, the products within these shipments may vary between different locations. Stores are making every effort to stock shelves as soon as deliveries are received. It is thanks to the employees at distribution centers for working extended hours, and associates having all hands on deck to provide access to goods and supplies in a timely manner. Due to their community dedication and continuous work ethic, individuals should not worry about Fred Meyer stores having bare shelves anytime soon.
Fred Meyer has also taken steps to accommodate their associates in light of the pandemic. The company recently instituted an emergency paid leave policy, which allows any associate diagnosed with COVID-19 or quarantined by a medical professional to receive full pay up to two weeks. Additionally as a token of gratitude for being there for customers, the community, and each other, the company is awarding a $300 bonus to full-time hourly employees and a $150 bonus to part-time employees in frontline grocery, supply chain, manufacturing, and customer service roles.
